“Personal conversations…were associated with higher loneliness but lower emotional dependence and problematic use at moderate usage levels.”

People who used ChatGPT for personal topics were often lonelier; however, if they used the tool in moderation, they were less likely to become dependent or use it in a harmful manner.

AI can serve as a coping mechanism, especially for individuals who feel isolated. Leaders should avoid a one-size-fits-all assumption and create space for human connection in digital workplaces.

“Non-personal conversations tended to increase emotional dependence, especially with heavy usage.”

Even when used only for practical tasks (such as administration or writing), excessive use was linked to growing emotional dependence on the AI.

This is counterintuitive—but essential. A heavy reliance on AI for routine tasks may lead to a subtle emotional attachment, especially when human interaction is reduced. Leaders must seek opportunities to foster human interaction in the workplace.

“Extended daily use was associated with worse outcomes.”

What this means:
People who used ChatGPT extensively every day, regardless of topic, were more likely to experience adverse emotional or psychological outcomes.

Workplace AI use should be balanced and intentional. Overuse can lead to detachment, dependency or burnout. Leaders must promote healthy usage habits and regularly check in on team well-being.
